Ex-Inter midfielder Stankovic appointed by Sampdoria

Former Inter and Lazio midfielder Dejan Stankovic has been appointed head coach of Sampdoria, the Serie A club announced on Thursday.

The 44-year-old Serbian succeeds Marco Giampaolo who was sacked on Sunday following a poor start to the season, with Sampdoria bottom of Serie A after picking up just two points from their opening eight matches.

Sampdoria announced Stankovic has signed a contract running until June 2023, with an option to extend the deal for another season.

Capped over 100 times by Yugoslavia and Serbia, Stankovic won Serie A with Lazio in 1999-2000 as well as the European Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 1999 during a six-year stint with the club.

Dutch FA opens 2018 World Cup bid up to FIFA Ethics Committee probe

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has announced that it will submit itself to an investigation by FIFA s independent Ethics Committee after allegations of bribery were made against its unsuccessful joint bid with Belgium to host the 2018 World Cup.

The KNVB has also ordered an independent audit into the bid, which was hit by corruption claims in a report by Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant this month.

That publication s article claimed the paper was in possession of documents showing bid organisers paid €10,000 to Amadou Dialllo in 2009, at a time when the lobbyist was affiliated with now disgraced former FIFA vice-president Mohamed bin Hammam.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the KNVB said its legal team had found no evidence of wrongdoing after s…

Man Utd expect to pay further tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton on Tuesday night

Manchester United are expected to pay further tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton ahead of Tuesday’s night’s Champions League match at Old Trafford.

The United Trinity statue outside the ground was awash with tributes to Charlton on Sunday as supporters laid flowers and scarves, with many leaving deeply personal thoughts for one of the club’s most famous sons, following his death aged 86.

A book of condolence was opened at the International Suite inside the stadium, while current boss Erik ten Hag and members of the United squad were adding their own messages at Carrington.

United confirmed discussions were continuing to take place with Charlton’s family and UEFA for further commemorative plans ahead of Tuesday’s night’s Champions League Group A match again…

Man City win Premier League 2020-21: Guardiola´s team of midfielders has perfect captain in Fernandi

Pep Guardiola s management of Manchester City has never felt quite as fraught as it did midway through his first season in charge, as the English winter of 2016-17 bit hard for a team in transition.

City collapsed to a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea in a top-of-the-table clash, a setback that preceded a humbling 4-2 loss at Leicester City.

After that game, Guardiola infamously remarked, I am not a coach for the tackles , and a 4-0 thumping at Everton the following month further fuelled suspicions in some quarters that The Barclays  was bringing the most celebrated coach of his generation to heel in its inimitable fashion.

As City bask in a third Premier League title in the past four years, it is striking how Guardiola s commitment to his principles has not wavered at all…

The Premier League season that rewrote the goalscoring record books

The 1,084 goals scored in this season’s Premier League were a record for a 20-team season.

Abdoulaye Doucoure’s crucial goal for Everton against Bournemouth on Sunday, which clinched the Toffees’ survival, also meant the league surpassed the previous high of 1,072 in 2018-19.

Here, the PA news agency looks at how it happened.

2022-23

Erling Haaland has rewritten the individual record books and his exploits for Manchester City have now helped create a new league record as well.

The Norwegian’s 36 goals led the way, with Harry Kane a distant second in the Golden Boot race despite scoring 30 for Tottenham.

Ivan Toney netted 20 for Brentford before starting his eight-month betting suspension, with Mohamed Salah (19) and Callum Wilson (18) com…

Argentina v Canada: Messi braced for tough Copa America title defence despite favourites tag

Argentina are preparing to defend their Copa America title, but Lionel Messi is staying realistic ahead of their opening match against Canada on Thursday.

The Albiceleste beat Brazil 1-0 in the final in 2021 to win the title for the first time since 1993 before going on to lift the World Cup just over a year later.

Since their victory over France in December 2022, Argentina have remained in strong form, losing just one of their 14 matches in all competitions and winning the other 13.

Messi, who will become the Copa America s all-time record appearance-maker when he next features in the tournament, says he expects to face a tough challenge to retain the trophy.

Argentina are always favourites, Messi said. I think it is going to be a very eventful tourname…

Tottenham to move from White Hart Lane in 2017-18

Tottenham are set to play 2017-18 home games away from White Hart Lane as plans for a new stadium on the site are to go to the High Court.

A compulsory purchase order (CPO) was pushed through by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Eric Pickles in July to allow Tottenham to press ahead with construction work that was hoped to be completed by 2017.

However, landowners Archway Sheet Metal Works Ltd and the Josif family have exercised their right to challenge the CPO in the High Court, meaning that the project will now be subject to further delays.

As a result, Tottenham s hopes of continuing playing at White Hart Lane while work is carried out have now been shelved in order to speed up the construction time, leaving the Premier League club wi…

Low promises ´different´ Germany against England at Euro 2020

Joachim Low said Germany will perform differently when they face England in the Euro 2020 knockout stage, after an error-strewn performance against Hungary.

Leon Goretzka scored a late equaliser to salvage a 2-2 draw at Allianz Arena, where Hungary twice took the lead in Munich on Wednesday.

But Low was pleased with the way Germany, who reached the semi-finals of the last two European Championships, fought back to claim a draw that secured second place in Group F, behind France.

We had an extremely good attitude; we made mistakes, but we fought, Germany head coach Low told reporters.

It wasn t a game for the faint of heart. We knew that Hungary would give everything and that it would be as close as it was.

To get through this group in the end, …

The Numbers Game: Will fortune favour the brave as title rivals meet?

Having won an unprecedented fourth straight Premier League title last season, Manchester City have wasted no time in stealing a march on their rivals in 2024-25.

As the only team to register a perfect four wins from four matches, City already boast a two-point lead over their closest challengers, the identity of whom also comes as no surprise.

Such has been City s brilliance, that amassing 173 points across the last two seasons has not been enough for Arsenal to end their long wait for a Premier League crown.

However, last week s North London Derby victory over Tottenham saw them display all the hallmarks of potential champions, keeping their fierce rivals at arm s length in a composed performance as Gabriel Magalhaes header made the difference.

But can …
