Terry rules out England return

Despite a triumphant return to Wembley on Sunday, John Terry has ruled out any chance of being involved in the England set-up again.

John Terry is not considering a possible return to the England set-up, after lifting the League Cup at Wembley with Chelsea on Sunday.

The Chelsea captain retired from the international game in September 2012 after claiming the Football Association made his position untenable in the wake of accusations he racially abused Anton Ferdinand.

When asked if Sunday s triumph at Wembley had prompted him to reconsider his position, Terry was unequivocal in his response.

I have missed it, playing in these big stadiums and in these competitions and I m delighted to get back to Wembley, he said.

Both teams to score at Barcelona vs Getafe 19/20 for Saturday’s La Liga showdown

Market: Both teams to score

Odds:

In what is a battle at the top of the La Liga table, a high-flying Getafe will make the trip to the Nou Camp on Saturday afternoon.

Starting with the hosts, while Barcelona may have managed to snatch a dramatic 3-2 win away at Real Betis last weekend, the reigning champions have shown some signs of inconsistency. Still sat three points adrift of Real Madrid and top spot, Head Coach Quique Setién is desperate for his side to find some much-needed stability at the back. Shipping a pair of goals on the road last time out, fans around the Nou Camp have seen their side land just a sole La Liga clean sheet since the 18th of December. Even more worrying for Saturday s hosts, Barcelona have managed to record just a pair of clean sheet…

Man Utd boss Solskjaer not conceding Premier League title ahead of derby clash

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is yet to concede the Premier League title to runaway leaders and neighbours Manchester City, while he talked up the club s progress.

Stuttering United are second and 14 points adrift of neighbours City ahead of Sunday s Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.

United go into the fixture having won only two their previous eight Premier League matches, a run that has not only dashed their title hopes but left the Red Devils vulnerable in the top-four race.

Fifth-placed Everton are only five points adrift of United – who are through 27 games – with a match in hand.

Despite United s wobbling form and City s comprehensive advantage, Solskjaer has not given up hope on Premier League silverware.

Why Manchester City are still not quite good enough

Not quite good enough?

Manchester City have promised to be a really serious threat to the top four this season. Great players such as Tevez and Adebayor have given them fire power whilst the signings of Barry, Toure and Lescott have given them strength in midfield and at the back. That is the theory anyway!

Decent

In fact, after a decent start when Adebayor couldn’t stop scoring, City did look like the real deal. Recent results and performances, however, have made the reality look a little less encouraging. They are still sitting on sixth place in the league and the coaching staff are all saying that they are pleased with how things are going, but we all know that the owners will not be happy and surely Mark Hughes can’t be happy with what he is seei…

Ince declines Cardiff offer

Blackpool winger Tom Ince has turned down the chance to join Premier League new boys Cardiff City, .

The England under 21 had asked to be given until Friday to decide whether or not to consider the Welsh sides offer, after a fee of £8million had been agreed between the two clubs.

The Bluebirds have said on Twitter that Ince has opted to remain in the North West to be close to his new born child.

Liverpool, the club where Ince began his career, were linked with a move for the 21 year old during the January transfer window, though their interest has waned as they have been pursuing other targets.

He played just fifteen minutes for the Reds, in a League Cup tie against Northampton Town in 2010, before moving to Blackpool via a brief loan spell with No…

Premier League clubs record January profit despite continued big spending

Fresh financial power in China helped Premier League clubs make a profit in a transfer window for the first time in January despite English clubs continuing to spend in record-breaking fashion.

Levels of spending for the 2016-17 season have reached a record of almost £1.4billion, thanks mainly to the astonishing £1.165bn forked out in the last transfer window.

Another £215m was shelled out over the past month a six-year high and the second-highest amount in a January window with Southampton and Burnley among those to secure big deals for Napoli s Manolo Gabbiadini and Norwich City s Robbie Brady respectively on deadline day.

However, the continued rise of spending in the lucrative Chinese Super League, coupled with high transfer fees from Championship teams, m…

Jones considered Manchester United exit under Van Gaal

Manchester United defender Phil Jones says he considered leaving the club under Louis van Gaal, but hailed Jose Mourinho s role in turning his career around.

Jones only started six Premier League matches in 2015-16, as he struggled to win a regular place in the team after dealing with injuries, and pondered whether Old Trafford was the right place to continue his career.

But the defender has emerged as a key player under Mourinho, starting 12 of United s 14 top-flight matches since the start of November.

And Jones now feels confident once again, as he did under his two favourite previous managers Sam Allardyce and Alex Ferguson.

No question there were thoughts about my future, Jones said to the Manchester Evening News.

It was in the back of my m…

Liverpool beat Burnley to return to the Premier League summit

Liverpool responded to Manchester City’s brief return to the top of the Premier League table with a 3-1 win over Burnley which tested their mettle even more than their stretched resources.

Pep Guardiola’s side had overtaken their north-west rivals to reach the summit for the first time since November with victory in the lunchtime kick-off against Everton.

And while the three points re-established their two-point advantage the less-than-convincing nature of victory against the league’s next-bottom side was not quite befitting the occasion of Liverpool’s biggest league crowd of 59,896 after the full opening of the Anfield Road stand.

Man Utd close gap to fifth as Scott McTominay heads late winner at Aston Villa

Super sub Scott McTominay’s thundering header secured Manchester United a late, hard-fought 2-1 victory away to fellow Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa.

This felt like a match that the sixth-placed Red Devils could ill afford to lose given Unai Emery’s men were a place higher in the standings and able to extend an eight-point cushion to an eye-watering 11.

In-form Rasmus Hojlund broke Villa hearts on Boxing Day and got United off to a dream start when scoring in a fifth straight Premier League match, but the hosts responded brilliantly and deserved Douglas Luiz’s second-half leveller.

Off the bench and on the scoresheet once again.

Get in there, Scott ||

Hertha snap-up Bayern youngster Weiser

Hertha Berlin have completed the signing of Bayern Munich winger Mitchell Weiser on a three-year contract.

Weiser moved to the Allianz Arena ahead of the 2012-13 season and spent the second half of that campaign on loan at Kaiserslautern.

The 21-year-old has found regular first-team football hard to come by in Munich, although he did manage 13 Bundesliga appearances last term thanks largely to injuries to the likes of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.

Weiser, who came through the ranks at Cologne, has now opted for a fresh challenge at Hertha where he will hope to secure more regular starts.

Speaking about the signing, Hertha general manager Michael Preetz told the club s official website: Mitchell is a young, viable player who plays mainly on the right-han…
